Is it safe to give possible employer a credit report?

I responded via email to an ad on craigslist for a realtor company hiring a receptionist. I asked what the company name was and what the job entails before I sent them my resume which had personal info such as address and phone #. They replied asking me to go to free credit report website to obtain a credit check and send it to them. Is that really necessary or even safe?? Are they just trying to steal my identity??

Can a Realtor disclose my credit report to my roommate?
