Don’t Pay For Your Free Personal Credit Report

Tim Parker asked:

All over the Internet, advertised on TV and radio, and saturating magazines are reports for services that will help you obtain your free personal credit report. Here’s the bottom line: Although I don’t have personal experience with these services, if they are charging you fees, they are banking on the fact that you don’t know that you can get it for free.

As you probably know, you are entitled to view your free personal credit report from the three reporting agencies for free once every 12 months. Notice that I said, FOR FREE three times. You don’t have to pay anything if you view it online. It’s extremely easy to obtain but you don’t do it by going to one of those advertised sites. Instead you go to a site that isn’t advertised. It’s the official site to get your free credit report called Annualcreditreport.com.

The process is very easy. Go to the above site, select your state and answer the questions. Select all three credit reporting agencies and get each report. Make sure to print each report and go over it with a fine tooth comb. If you see any errors, go to each reporting agency’s website and follow the instructions to dispute the misinformation.

While you may be tempted to close out your unused credit cards that have been sitting idle, the credit experts recommend not closing these accounts. Apparently it is better for your credit score to keep these accounts open By closing your cards, it decreases the amount of credit available to you which increases your debt load. Also, keep track of your FICO score. Your FICO score is what qualifies you for a loan and sometimes a job.

The most important thing to take from this article is this: Do not pay for your FREE personal credit reports. It’s quick, it’s painless, and it’s free when you go to the site that is set up by the government.

Renting apartment with bad credit?

rexy asked:

Can you still rent an apartment if you have bad credit?
I live in CA and I would like to rent my first apartment in the near future ( within 2 years). I got my credit report from Equifax and it shows that I have Currently ‘past due’ 2 accounts and in the Negative Acct History it show 8 accts ( the 2 past due are included). Of the 8, two of them are not paid and the rest are “charge off” or “collections paid” All this info is correct.
Will I still be able to get ‘approved’? Does any one have any personal experience in renting their first apartment.
I have a steady job, work full time and have been w/ the company for 6 years. I have paid off most of my debt, but my ‘bad’ credit happenend when I was in college about 8 years ago.

if i settle acct. w/ a collection agency does it show on my credit?

In the Land of the Lost & Found asked:

I spoke to a collection agency. They are saying that I can settle my debt for less than what I owe. It still has not hit my credit report. If I settle will it eventually show? The agent said it wont, but I know they just want to get paid.
Any personal experience w/this?
I asked for it in writting. She said they don’t have a letter format for this.

Beating Capital One’s Credit Limit Reporting Disposition?

Alexander Vasarab asked:

From everything that I’ve ever read to my own personal experience, Capital One does not report your credit limit to any of the three credit bureaus. That said, I know that FICO’s score algorithm substitutes your highest recorded balance in for your credit limit in the absence of it being reported. My question is this: Will finding an item equivalent in cost to your real credit limit, charging it to your card, and then returning it immediately correct credit reports to reflect the true credit limit?

For example, let’s imagine that I have a credit limit of $10,000 and I purchase a huge, flat-screen plasma television for $9,000, and return it the next day and thus have the $9,000 credited to my account, will this set it straight in my credit reports? Thanks!
