How to Arrange Credit Checks on Individuals

Chris J Anderson asked:

The credit check is very important step for back ground check in HR. The credit worthiness of some candidate can have significant importance in the decision of hiring especially if there is some unexplained area. The access of credit check is however not that easy, there are easy to understand legal requirement regarding the privacy of person to protect the personal credit history. The request to bank for credit check can include the following documents.

1- Request for obtaining Credit Report
2- The key information (simple or comprehensive report)
3- Permission for obtaining the credit report (endorsed by the future employee)

The legal requirements for the check in case of employee assessment is that the person should endorse in writing the request for the credit report. The reason for issuance of this information might be to obtain the honesty and credibility of the future employee. The bank however should provide the partial credit information not the complete credit history of employee.

If some decision like promotion is done based solely on the report, the legal requirement is there to disclose that information to the employee. This will automatically give him the right to challenge if he is not satisfied.

There are some cases where the other person can easily have the access to the personal information especially the credit reports; these include the case where the person might have given the power of attorney to bank for obtaining it. The minor, children and legal hires can obtain the credit reports, the procedure will be to send a request with due documents attached stating the reason of obtaining this information.

The exceptional cases for obtaining of the credit report can also include the credit report relating to some transaction to assess the credit worthiness, for example the credit checks done for the re mortgage or credit debt settlement cases.

Another similar situation where the credit can be requested is in case of insurance, or assessment for credit worth for underwriting purpose. This request is normally provided to the bank with due reason, so in return the bank shares the particular information with the insurance company or the other financial institution involved.

The eligibility of someone for obtaining some official benefit can also be attached to it. The government benefits and licenses are some times attached to certain income groups, as the result the agencies responsible for dispersal of these benefits can ask for the credit report too.

Your Personal Credit and Your Business Credit History

Pamela Williams asked:

When establishing a separate credit history for your business, does your personal credit matter?  Does it make a difference whether or not you have good personal credit?  As a business owner, why should you be concerned about your personal credit score?

Your Personal Credit and Your Business

As a new entrepreneur, you may need to apply for a loan in order to finance your business.  Without business credit, lenders would be looking at your personal credit history instead to determine whether to approve or decline your application.  Thus, having an excellent personal credit or a high FICO score would surely win you an easy approval from your preferred lender.  Consequently, if you have a low FICO score or a questionable credit, you may find it more difficult to get approved for a loan.

On the other hand, you may also be able to obtain the loan you need by applying for a bad credit business loan.  Lenders who offer poor credit business loans always approve clients regardless of the status of their credit.  However, these loans are expectedly more expensive than loans that require good credit.

Clearly, the status of your personal credit score makes a difference in getting the financing you need for your business.  But what happens after your loan has been approved?  What’s the next step in building your business credit?  Why should you establish a separate credit history for your business?

Establishing Your Business Credit

As soon as your loan has been granted, you should take the necessary steps to establish a separate credit for your business.  Make sure that you’ve obtained all the necessary permit, licences, tax id numbers, and registration numbers that are required for businesses.  Afterwards, register your business with a business credit reporting agency like Dun & Bradstreet or Experian Business.

Remember to submit your monthly loan payments on time to build good credit.  At the start, any delays or misses on your payments will also reflect on your personal credit report.  Why is this?  Since your personal credit history was used on opening up the loan, your credit report acts like a co-signer for your business.  Therefore, it is crucial to keep up with your payments not only to build a good business credit but to protect your personal credit as well.

After some time of consistent payments, you should have already established your corporate credit.  You may need to wait a year or more before you can completely separate your business credit report from your personal credit report.

New businesses are just like a teenager who’s just starting to build a credit history for himself.  At first, a student may need a co-signer to get a loan but once approved, a student can slowly build his own credit history and after a while,  he can easily apply for new credit without relying on other people’s credit.  Clearly, if you plan to venture in business, preparing your personal credit is a must.  Although a good personal credit history isn’t necessary required to start a business, it is definitely an advantage.

Credit Report

Mike Clover asked:

What is in a credit report? A credit report is a snapshot of your current obligations to creditors. These creditors include credit card companies, mortgage companies, banks, and retail stores. Lenders are permitted by law to check your credit report and review it in order to determine whether or not to grant credit to you. In order to build a credit report all you have to do is establish credit in the form of a bank loan, credit card account, car loan, mortgage, or studen loan. Information on your credit report comes directly from your history with accounts you currently have outstanding loans with. Whether you pay your obligations on time or not, lenders will report that information to the credit bureaus. There are four categories.

1. Your personal information: Your credit report identifies you will the following information.

” Your name

” Social Security number

” Current address ” Previous address

” Birth date

” Current employer and previous employers

” Phone number

2. Your credit history: Your credit history will show your payment history with current lenders such as:

” Credit Card companies

” Mortgage companies

” Retail stores

” Finance companies

3. Inquiries: This is where lenders are finance companies have requested your credit report. The rule of thumb is the less inquiries the better.

4. Public Records: Your credit report lists any obligations that may affect your credit including the following:

” Judgments

” Tax Liens

” Bankruptcies

Credit Reports are now available to any organization that is trying to grant you credit, or a company considering hiring you. Your personal credit report is so important during this day and age that you need to have a current copy to see what they are seeing. Even landlords are pulling credit in order to grant you permission to rent from them. With all this in mind, it is highly recommended that you have recent copy of your credit report, so that you are aware whats being reported in regards to your personal credit history. Most of the companies that provide credit reports, dont understand credit, they just sell you a credit report. There are also websites that offer a credit report for Free but fail to mention that you will not get a free credit score. Make sure when you obtain a copy of your credit report it comes with all 3 reports and score. It makes no sense to get copy of your credit report without your scores since creditors look heavily at your credit scores. Remember “your Credit is your Life.”

Understanding Personal Credit Can Help You Have Better

John Franz asked:

The more you want to be able to have in life like nice cars and homes, the more important personal credit becomes in being able to have those items and a great deal more. Unfortunately, many people don’t understand personal credit and the impact it has on many aspects of their life and how it can influence the way that they can live after some time. Personal credit is all based on an individual’s credit report, which contains a great deal of information like buying and payment habits. All of the financial information about a person’s personal credit history is contained on their credit report.

It is important to know about what is on your personal credit report even before looking to make any kind of purchase or apply for any type of credit. A good credit report can give you a great deal of purchasing power while a less than acceptable personal credit report can have a great deal of influence on how much interest you may end up paying or if you can even get credit or be allowed financing at all. While you may think that you have excellent credit, it pays to check and find out if there are any errors or discrepancies that can be fixed before attempting to get financing on any purchase.

You should check your personal credit report at least once a year by examining reports from each of the three major credit bureaus, which are Experian, Equifax and Trans Union. Many times you can view your reports for under $10.00 or even for free. In fact, if you are checking your report because you have been turned down for credit by a lender, you can view your credit report for free within 60 days of that decision.

When viewing your personal credit report, you should look at all of the information as a potential creditor would see it. Make sure that if you pay all of your bills on time, the report accurately displays this information. If your debt is near your credit limit, this is not looked on favorably. Your credit rating is especially important if you don’t have an extensive personal credit history yet. If you apply for a lot of credit during a short period of time, this is factored in your personal credit report and can have a damaging impact on approval or interest rates.

If you happen to find a discrepancy on your personal credit report, make sure that all of the information that is listed really belongs to you and that the balances are current and correct. If you find that a credit report still lists old loans that have been satisfied, contact the credit bureau and request that it be adjusted. Keep in mind that information including bankruptcies and collection agency referrals are kept on personal credit reports for between seven and ten years. If you find any errors on your personal credit report, the credit bureau is required to investigate the incorrect entry and adjust it accordingly
