InsuranceHotline.com Dispels the Top Fall Car Insurance Myths

InsuranceHotline.com Dispels the Top Fall Car Insurance Myths

Toronto, Ontario (PRWEB) November 02, 2011

This autumn, learn the facts about some of the most common car insurance myths.    Most drivers have heard these myths presented as fact at some point, but knowing the truth could save a lot of hassle and money. “Just because someone passes on information as though it were fact doesn’t make it so,” Tammy Ezer of InsuranceHotline.com advises, “get the facts from a real expert before you make any judgment calls.”

Commute Distance Determines Rates

Commute distance does have an impact on insurance rates, but probably not as much as most people think. Many insurance companies use a run of distances to determine how rates will be affected by commute. The three categories typically used are:

distanced less than 5 km distances between 6 and 24 km distances over 25 km

All else being equal, someone who drives less than 5 km to work will likely have a different rate than someone with a 30 km commute, but a distance of 7 km and one of 20 km may not impact rates as both of these fall into the same category. Also, moving up a category only tends to impact rates by about 10 – 15%. Look instead at things like car thefts and accident rates where you live and of course driving record, as the major culprits in placing differences.

No Police Report, No Risk of Claim

If the police are not called to the scene of an accident and no report is filed, many people believe the danger of a claim being filed for injuries or damage has passed. The fact is that anyone involved in an accident has one year to file a damage claim and two years for injury claims.

Whether because the symptoms of the injury didn’t arise until later, they didn’t notice the damage or simply that they were not aware of their rights at the scene, an injured party in an accident has time to put in a claim. It doesn’t matter if a police report was filed or not; not until two years have passed, is the risk of a claim gone.

Cyclists Don’t Need to Follow the Same Rules as Cars

Even on two wheels, the same laws of the road apply. Cyclists can be charged with a travelled violation just caring a car, including:

Failing to signal when changing lanes or turning Failing to obey traffic signs and lights Illegal turns and lane changes

The Highway Traffic Act applies to all traffic on the roads, including cyclists. A moving violation on a bike may appear on your record just like one in a car – and may have an impact on your auto insurance rate.

Accident Forgiveness Means no Repercussions

The concept of accident forgiveness is one of the selling points in insurance policies and it gives those who have it a false sense of safety from repercussions after an accident. The truth is that accident forgiveness carries plenty of fine print and conditions:

Accident forgiveness may not apply to incidents where serious or criminal charges are filed Accident forgiveness will not follow a consumer to a new insurance company if they switch during the six years the accident is on record Policies don’t have accident forgiveness automatically, just because an insurance company offers it. It may need to be purchased as an add-on; This coverage could cost anywhere from $ 50-$ 100 per year. Each insurance company can put their own limitations on accident forgiveness

Rental Cars are Always Covered

At the rental desk, many people foreswear the company’s insurance on the rental because they infer that their ain insurance will frost them. In some situations this is truthful, but before leasing it is up to the driver to tick their coverage. There are plenty of factors that can touch coverage in a rental car:

The policy must include full coverage in order for full coverage to be extended Rental car coverage is an optional coverage that must be added to the policy usually at an extra charge Where the rental car is being driven (check the rules on the country in which the car is rented if outside of Canada) determines coverage There may be maximum limits on the policy that would not cover a luxury or sports car rental

In some cases rental car coverage is available through credit card benefits, but be sure to verify the limits of this coverage.

There are many myths about car insurance; InsuranceHotline.com recommends getting the facts from an insurance professional every time.

How to Arrange Credit Checks on Individuals

Chris J Anderson asked:

The credit check is very important step for back ground check in HR. The credit worthiness of some candidate can have significant importance in the decision of hiring especially if there is some unexplained area. The access of credit check is however not that easy, there are easy to understand legal requirement regarding the privacy of person to protect the personal credit history. The request to bank for credit check can include the following documents.

1- Request for obtaining Credit Report
2- The key information (simple or comprehensive report)
3- Permission for obtaining the credit report (endorsed by the future employee)

The legal requirements for the check in case of employee assessment is that the person should endorse in writing the request for the credit report. The reason for issuance of this information might be to obtain the honesty and credibility of the future employee. The bank however should provide the partial credit information not the complete credit history of employee.

If some decision like promotion is done based solely on the report, the legal requirement is there to disclose that information to the employee. This will automatically give him the right to challenge if he is not satisfied.

There are some cases where the other person can easily have the access to the personal information especially the credit reports; these include the case where the person might have given the power of attorney to bank for obtaining it. The minor, children and legal hires can obtain the credit reports, the procedure will be to send a request with due documents attached stating the reason of obtaining this information.

The exceptional cases for obtaining of the credit report can also include the credit report relating to some transaction to assess the credit worthiness, for example the credit checks done for the re mortgage or credit debt settlement cases.

Another similar situation where the credit can be requested is in case of insurance, or assessment for credit worth for underwriting purpose. This request is normally provided to the bank with due reason, so in return the bank shares the particular information with the insurance company or the other financial institution involved.

The eligibility of someone for obtaining some official benefit can also be attached to it. The government benefits and licenses are some times attached to certain income groups, as the result the agencies responsible for dispersal of these benefits can ask for the credit report too.

The Truth Behind Common Myths About Your Credit Report

Jon Arnold asked:

It is truly amazing to note the number of “facts” that many people think they know about credit reports and how various factors affect your credit score that are just simply untrue. For as much importance that is placed on having as good of a credit report and credit score as possible these days, it is critical for the consumer to understand the truth behind how your credit score is affected by various things. This is especially important in today’s world, as car insurance companies and even many employers are now checking a consumer’s credit report before making a decision about their insurance premiums or making a job offer.

Myth #1: When my fiance and I get married, we will have a joint credit report and the negatives from our individual reports will go away.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Even after you are married, you will still have separate credit reports. Any new credit items added to your report will be the result of opening joint accounts or having your name added to their existing account. Any negative information that was there before will still be there.

Myth #2: As long as my credit cards are not over their credit limit, they will give me a good credit score.

Not completely true. The two worst things you can do to get a bad credit score are to consistently miss or be late with payments, and to go over your credit limit. If you make your payments on time and stay under your credit limit, you will get an “ok” rating on that credit card. But to maximize the number of points you get on your credit card towards your credit score, it is best to keep your outstanding balance at about 20-30% of your credit limit.

Myth #3: When you negotiate a settlement amount with a lender, that account will show up as being fine on your credit report.

Wrong. If you have to negotiate something, that would indicate that you are working on a deal to pay them some amount less than what you actually owe. In that case, it will definitely have a negative effect on your credit score and show up as a negative item.

Myth #4: Closing old accounts will raise your credit score.

Totally inaccurate and in fact, can very potentially have the opposite effect and lower your credit score. Remember, your credit score is a picture of your credit history, and if you close old accounts, your credit history is reduced, thereby potentially lowering your overall score.

Myth #5: The best or only way to raise your credit score is to use one of the companies that specialize in that.

This is the biggest myth and also one of the biggest pieces of hogwash. Some of those companies that claim they can fix your credit can do so to varying degrees, and some cannot do a thing. But the real truth of the matter is that none of those companies can do anything that you cannot do yourself at no charge except for postage stamps. In fact, since you are the consumer who is disputing his or her own credit report, you actually have more clout in this way than those companies do.

Myth #6: Errors on your credit report are rare, and will correct themselves automatically when they occur.

Absolute baloney. The truth of the matter is that the vast majority of consumers have errors on their credit report. Compound that with the fact that those errors do NOT correct themselves, ever, unless you point out the error and dispute it.

Your credit score and credit history are used in a wide variety of places and the use of them is increasing every day. It is definitely worth your time and effort to get copies of your credit report and ensure that it is accurate, which is a huge step towards raising your credit score.
