How do I get something removed from my credit report?

armyguy83 asked:

I posted a question earlier and it was answered (I will not be hiring a professional credit repair company). But I’d like to know EXACTLY how I can go about disputing a collection I have paid off to get it removed from my credit report.

Background:

-I had a balance from an old Verizon Wireless account that went to collections. Collection and payment notices went to the wrong address, so I only found out about this balance when I checked my credit report a few months ago.

I paid off this collection ASAP, but I was bothered to see it was still on my credit report as “Charged off”.

-Shouldn’t it say “Paid in full” if I did, in fact, pay it off?

-If that “Charged off” comment is in error, could I just get the whole thing removed based on that?

-I understand that I can just try to get it taken off by requesting proof of a contract and if they don’t reply within 30 days, I can get it taken off my credit report. What are the EXACT procedures for doing this?

Also, bonus question:

-I have a current personal loan through Prosper.com that is in good standing and has been for over 18 months… but it is not appearing on my Transunion or Equifax credit reports. How can I get that reported to them?

THANKS!

Verizon will show the charge of for the full seven year period as that is factual. Look under the collection items and make sure the collection company has reported paid collection or a zero balance as owed. If not then dispute that to the credit reporting companies. as to your last question not all companies report to all three reporting agencies as there is a cost to do so monthly and they may just subscribe to 1 of the three. So you cannot get that part fixed

How did you pay this debt? You need some proof for this to be removed. Do you have a check copy, money order, credit card statement showing the payment? If so, Dispute this debt with the credit bureau and send them proof that you pay the company off. When they do their investigation and have proof, they will take it off. And if the debt is removed, it should say “Paid Collection” on your credit report. Call Verizon and see if they have any record of you paying this debt and if they do have it, send it to the credit bureau.

And with Prosper.com, they only report to Experian. They don’t report to the other 2 credit bureaus.

Learn everything about repairing and/or building credit

any letter to credit burea with account information can get the prosper loan put on your credit report. Just include all information.

as for disputing with asking proof of contract wont work, your credit file will get flagged and most likely they will stop accepting letters from you in the future. A company does not have to give anyone prrof of a contract. All that needs to be verified is dates and account with address and all other information. But you can get it taken off. The credit burea will only update information. and it will not help your credit score, you must get it taken off to improve your score.
