Free Credit Report.Com?

Sheila T asked:

I keep seeing this commercial and ads everywhere for “Free Credit Report.com”…My question is; Is it really safe to use this company to check out your credit score online? I mean, I’ve always heard that you should never give out personal information over the internet for ANY reason but, to use the service of this company, you have to give them the most personal info possible including real name, home address, SS#, etc…
I would like to check my credit score but, I am afraid to give out my personal info over the net…
Can anyone give me some advice or info about this?

It is safe and it’s well-trusted. I have found that when you go somewhere that asks for personal information, then the site is okay. But if they came to you asking for it, that is a red flag. It’s not always true, but it’s something to think about.

Anyway, if you decide to pay for something on that site, you should actually use myfico.com. Myfico.com is likely to be more up-to-date and therefore accurate, and it is the site that lenders use the most.

The correct official site is or go to and follow the “Free Credit Reports” link from there. Any other site is not an official site.

There should be no fee to get your credit report (once per year from each of 3 agencies), but there may be a fee if you want a credit “score”.

How do you suppose they have so many thousands of dollars to spend on advertising?

is better. It really is free and unlike freecreditreport.com, they won’t sell your addy to spammers or try to sell you something else.

This site is legit, but it signs you up for a credit monitoring service. You get a free intro period, then you get charged for the service.

To get you report from all 3 credit reporting agencies, go to annualcreditreport.com. This was set up when it became law that you could see your report once a year. You can check this site one time every 12 months. If you want your credit score, you have to pay for that. But the reports are free. You will have to provide some private information, like your ss#, but they also verify your identity with questions they already have the answers to.
